Here's the model editor for Event Horizon. I've included instructions and a quick example to get you going. This app can be used to edit both spaceships and weapons. |

Me too... is there any way to import models of other formats? cause I can do some relatively competent stuff, just not with this program... *grr hate bugs* _________________ A proud SeeForDee user. |

Hmm, are you guys using 10.3? I've only actually tested this on 10.1 and 10.2. I'll try to see what I can do with it.
As for other formats, I don't support any yet. Any ideas as to whether any would be easy (and free!) to implement? I'll look into that, however. |

is Maya PLE a language, or a program?
Is it free?
is it easy to learn? |

Maya is a popular 3D modeling and animation program, very expensive. PLE is the free Maya version, I believe it puts a watermark on everything. I personally don't like maya all that much. I'm a fan of Cinema 4D.
As towards supporting other formats, I'm not so sure abot the techy side of that, but 3DS is the most popular file format for game models, although the program that makes them (3D Studio Max) isn't for Mac. However, pretty much everyprogram out there can export to 3DS. _________________ A proud SeeForDee user. |

I'd say that using the DFX format would be good if textures can be added in the program. DFX is a reasonable format (IMO) and can be produced by applications other than that 3D Studio Max one…
LightWave is supposed to be good but I never tried it. I still like Infini-D 4.5 _________________ Cap'n Hector |

Hmm... The link seems to be for a concrete company. |

Well, I was looking into these things last night a little bit. 3DS would be fairly straightforward to implement (it's actually quite similar to what I developed). I haven't looked too much at DXF, but I know it doesn't natively support textures, so I would have to write an extension for that, which is certainly a possibility. What are you guys' preferences? |

I don't do modeling /that/ much, I'm more of a programmer. |

I would urge some format other than 3D Studio Max…The app is $2,000 and doesn't run on Macs. This would slightly limit how many Mac users can make ships…
If Maya PLE can export texture-baked models without a watermark, then we're good…I think PLE uses a proprietary graphics format, but I'm not sure about it's models.
We might look into the formats that low-end 3D apps can export…Cararra and Lightwave come to mind, and I know that Lightwave can do baked models. _________________ Cap'n Hector |

Check out blender3d. It's free, runs on just about every OS known to mankind, and supports quite a few 3D formats (including DXF). I don't know if it can apply textures to DXF, but if it can't, I can probably write a program that can . _________________ Differentiation is an integral part of calculus. |

Hmm, how about if everybody posts their 3D apps and the formats they support? Then we can see what we're working with.
I have blender, which can handle VRML, DXF, Videoscape, AC3D, Cal3D, DirectX, OFF, Radiosity, Raw Triangle, and UV Face Layout.
I also have my own program which can handle my format Converting it to work with 3DS would probably be fairly simple.
BTW, I looked at Maya, and as far as I can tell, even the full version doesn't offer any reasonable export capabilities. _________________ Differentiation is an integral part of calculus. |

I've got Carrara Studio 2, and that can handle 3D Studio, 3DMF, DXF, WaveFront, VRML.
For the game the ideal would be a model+texture in one package. I know 3D Studio and WaveFront OBJ formats both support textured models…as does VRML.
Pre-baked (that is, texture included) models are probably ideal. Based on tests with baked files 3DS does look pretty good. Paul…I'll send some ship models your way in OBJ, VRML, and 3DS formats.
Actually, nix VRML…Those files are huge. The same model was 3 megs in Obj and >1 meg in 3DS…but 20 megs in VRML _________________ Cap'n Hector |
