Linux is not for the squeamish. You're only supposed to use Linux if you know what you're doing; I thought I did.
Today, I had a lot of reading to do so I decided I would backup my filesystem (like I've been trying to do for a while). Before, I tried using the K3B burning system, but it just kept screwing up and made coasters. Finally I remembered seeing a "Backup Filesystem" button under the Mandrake Control Center; so I decided to try that. It said that it was going to .tar and .gzip it for compression (standard on Unix systems). I thought, "Okay, whatever." After I set it off I went about reading............................................... somewhere around two hours latter it pops up a window which displays all the files it compressed (i.e. ALL OF THEM). Once I scroll down near the bottom, the last two lines say something like "cdrecord: burner doesn't support TAO burning format.", and "cdrecord: cannot burn". I became REALLY mad at this point. As in usual fashion, after you do something big like this, I rebooted. It loads back up and is unpacking the kernel (basically going through a checklist) and says "There is 0 space left on drive. This is < 2000MB: WARNING" or something like that. Now I'm mad and confused. I launch a terminal after I log in and type "df -k" to display how much space I have left. I have 0% space left on my Linux partition and 9% space left on my personal files partition. I didn't give any thought to the fact at the beginning that it was going to .tar.gz ALL my files. So now I have a slightly compressed duplicate of my files spread out over my entire drive.
I should be able to fix it, but it'll take some time.

Heh, that stinks
I pretty much only back up my my personal documents and pictures. I figure applications are fairly easy to download again or reinstall. _________________ Differentiation is an integral part of calculus. |

Oops, user error. Stupid me, tar (of course) is archiving, which means it's all in one spot. I had the joy of deleting a 9.8 GB file. I like destroying files! w00t, destruction!
Speaking of w00t, I've come to the conclusion that you guys don't say w00t enough (if at all). So to make up for it: super-w00t! Here's a link to the etimology of the word w00t!

w00t is the word of awesomeness.
And Linux can be fun when you figure it out. This server is running Gentoo linux, and I have a couple of Gentoo servers at home. I run 'em both headless, so I use the fun command-line tools. _________________ Cap'n Hector

w00t! Another Gentoo user! I'm having problems right now with the xorg.conf file for my monitor, though. I'm going to have to rebuild it for my other linux-box too. I know it takes some effort to make an install script, but they could at least automate SOME of it! Gentoo apparently hearkens back to the old-style linux installs.
I actually find it easier to do a lot of things on the command-line than in the gui.
The only reason I'm switching to Gentoo is that I feel that Mandrake has started to do a Red Hat and remove some packages and give them only to Prime Members; I really like Gentoo's motive for doing what they do: trying to improve linux, not just package it up and ship it off.

There's a way to manually run the config for X…something like xorg --config or xorg -config (I had to once, now run headless…)
Gentoo is actually the only Linux I've ever installed, and it's a killer server. _________________ Cap'n Hector |

Oh, I'm not manually running it, I'm just editing the file manually. It's a pain finding all the parameters of my monitor, though.
If what you say was how you did it, then it's xorg --config because a single - is for single letter elements.

I know it's normally two dashes for words, but not everyone follows those rules.
Heck, some programs will even work without dashes in front of the options…tar and ps are good examples. _________________ Cap'n Hector |

Okay, not only am I having problems with linux, but also with Doors (like thatś a big surprise ;D). Every time I install Doors, a few months latter (this time a couple of days latter) it crashes and, on boot-up, says that I have to rund SCANREG on the DOS terminal. Each time I do it, it doesn´t do anything. I even let it sit for a couple of hours once and STILL nothing. I also tried the recovery disk but that made things worse. After all this, I have to wipe the partition and re-install (what a pain). Fortunately, Linux doesn´t assume it´s the only thing in the world and can mount Doors. This allows me to copy and backup all of my personal files.
At least with Linux when something goes wrong, you can do something about it. With Wind... I mean Doors, your only choices are to (1) run SCANREG, (2) use the recovery disc (which never works), (3) take it into a shop and lose a lot of money, (4) re-install it, and (5 - the one I´d really like to do if I didn´t need Doors for things) BURN IT!!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Questions? Comments?

Okay,
I have a Y-splitter in a room - Room 1 - that actually has a phone-jack that leads to a phone in that room and to a "Catch-A-Call" in another - Room 2 - by way of a REALLY big phone-line. Then the "Catch-A-Call" goes to my modem in my desktop computer and to another Y-splitter. That Y-splitter goes to a phone in Room 2 and to my brand-spankin-new laptop that is so incredibly awesome (except that it's not Apple). The cord from the second Y-splitter has to go across the room. What's the fix? Why tack it to the ceiling, of course!
Conclusion:
Technology makes life soooo much easier...
