I already said what I wanted to say about asthetic upgrades near the end of the first thread I posted. I just want to post a prelim (there's that word again) idea of the kind of look for planets I was talking about. Look here on my site. I think it would look cool to look like that only with more doo-dads like water, ice, meteor belts, etc.
I'm in a rush to so I'll talk more tomorrow.

P.S. Let me know if this is where this post goes. _________________ "Never sneak up on a turtle while he's welding" |

Do you mean applying a texture that looks bumpy, or having actual bumps in the planet? Because I just use a sphere for all the planets. You can make the texture itself as detailed and aesthetic as you like. But I don't think adding actual bumps would work that well. For one thing, a mountain would have to be humongous to really make even a small bump when seen from outer space.
I should probably make the asteroids irregularly shaped, though. And I'm thinking it might be fairly simply to add rings to the planets. But that's probably about it. _________________ Differentiation is an integral part of calculus. |

1) I know a mountain which would be extremely noticable from space would be humungous, but it would still look cool.
2) sorry about not being specific; I meant a bump-map, a balck and white texture applied to the surface to react to lighting like it had dimension but doesn't really.
3) You can see how bump/atmospheric effects can add to the coolness of a plaent here. This is the tutorial showing how to make this planet.

Ah, right. I'm not sure what I'm doing right now supports that, but I guess it is a possibility for the future. But it seems to me that the planet texture itself ought to be able to pretty much take care of that. _________________ Differentiation is an integral part of calculus. |

Maybe for mountains, but you will still need a specular map so that land will look like dirt (and not shine) and water will reflect.
