Hi, I just thought I'd start a thread that's not imposing on the other threads for anyone who needs help with the usage of The GIMP or Blender. I'm pretty knowledgeable in both, but know more about Blender than The GIMP. Currently I am working on advanced tutorials on character modeling (without the aid of MakeHuman) and character rigging (one of the most difficult and undocumented functions of Blender). So just ask away... any time now... nnnnnnnnnnnnnnow... okay I'll check latter... nope... how 'bout NOW, darn...

If you guys want me to, I can also start work on making a tutorial for making good planet textures by hand (i.e. without downloading "Joe's Planets"***) in The GIMP. Surprisingly, it has been very difficult for me to find any tutorials on planet texturing, so I'll just have to make one myself. Mr. Green

-Mogul

P.S. I don't know when I'll have those tutorials done, but I'll keep you posted.
P.P.S. I also understand that these tutorials have absolutely nothing to do with EH, but they are just what I'm working on right now.
P.P.P.S. If anyone has any suggestions, you can post those here too.

Okidokey, I'll start on a space-ship tutorial as soon as possible. I do have other priorities, but I'll do that instead of the character tutorials first.

Yeah, I know there's no hurry, but I still am excited and want it done pronto. Very Happy

What I need from somebody is a sketchy idea for a space ship. It can be a description or a really bad drawing; if it's a description, it needs to be detailed, if it's a drawing (with a description of what I'm seeing), it does not need to be detailed or even good. I could do this tutorial on my own (in fact, I already have a ship planned out), but I thought that I'd get to whole crew involved.

Once I have that idea, I'll show how you can take that from concept to reality. The first tutorial on making a ship will only involve modelling in Blender; there will be NO textures, that's for the second tutorial for texturing in The GIMP.

If we have several really good ideas, we can vote on it with a poll or something. One thing I want to ask someone is if I should make this tutorial a local HTML/CSS page, a PDF, or just me posting text and pictures on the blog. If no one cares, then I'll do it in downloadable HTML/CSS format because, if necessary, we can then post it in a tutorials section.

Well, I could do an x-wing type of ship, but I want to do something that will be usable in the game without copyright infringements. I'm REALLY big on not breakings copyrights, trade marks, etc.

Make a bad sketch and upload it temporariryly so that I can see what it looks like. If you don't want to go with an x-wing then we'll scrap this idea. You can still use the x-wing idea, but apply it to a different (yet still cool) hull.

I made a bunch of spaceship drawings a good number of years ago, several of which I think are good enough to turn into EH spaceships. Fell free to leave off such detail things as turrets, etc. It doesn't have to be an exact copy, either, just based on it. Here's the original drawing:

And here's a model I was working on in Wings3D to help with visualization (it's slightly different, as you can see):

Cool, I'll get to work. Thankfully I'll have some free time here with it being spring, but even that won't be too long.

Thanks Paul,
-Mogul

P.S. Yesterday I cracked open my C++ book, but I fell asleep after a few paragraphs. Mr. Green I'm trying, but I don't know how long it'll take for me to finish it, the C book, and the OGL introduciton I'm going through.
P.P.S. On your main site you laughed at Java, but you probably shouldn't give up on it that easily, after all someone has made a JOGL.

I wouldn't try too much OpenGL until you actually know C Very Happy

As for the Java thing, there was no JOGL, or even Java3D back when I was writing that! Heh, I think I wrote it with the JDK 1.0.2... very early stuff Smile And C offers more native functionality, anyway. You can write a native interface for Java, but with the amount of native stuff I'm calling, it's far simpler just to do it in C.

I know a fair amount of C, it's just that I need to brush up a little on syntax and usage; well, maybe A LOT on syntax and usage. Embarassed I won't be doing anything with OGL until I get KDevelop (popular IDE for various languages) to work on my Linux because, of course, I need to make the OGL shell window.

By the way, I just like Java because of its portability. On the DoI boards, the developers are constantly having to change large sections of code to make it compile on the different platforms. If you check out their Windows port, you'll see that they're having a nightmare (Windows sucks Razz).

Hum, albeit I agrre with the last comment (Win sucks), we don't have to change "large chunks of code" & the problems appear mostly because of the use of a specific library, or writting code a compiler understand & another doesnt. There'snot ,especially in the client, that much code different. Among the biggest is the init where we give a different library path for win & mac ! Anyhow, Java may be portable, but since it's interpreted each & every time, ,after a successful compile, a c or c++ build should runfaster each & every time... ^^

Sorry, I don't check the DoI devel as much as... well... actually I don't really know how devel goes over here either Laughing.

You should be careful with your language (no flame war intended). Mr. Green

I thought you meant that C/C++ will run faster and faster each time you run it (first time takes two secs., second one sec., etc.). It kind of confused me at first. Also, Java is getting faster and faster with latter updates; too, with faster processors it won't matter eventually. Also, I've heard something about the Just In Time Compiller (JIT) which I guess Paul can tell you about (I have no clue what it is or what it does for compilling Java).

Oh! Dorth, I also found another Linux distro you may be interested in. It's install may suck, but once you get it in, apparently it's AWESOME. They developed something called Portage which allows you to do something like this:
Code:
emerge gimp
and it will search online in it's "Portage Tree" for all the packages (currently 8,000) for you to get the latest version of The GIMP. Gentoo is here. I'll warn you that I haven't tried it (install is really a pain), but it sounds REALLY cool. Cool To update to latter version you don't even need to re-install all you do is
Code:
emerge -u world
and the it will search all the programs you have installed, find the appropriate updates, and install them. Now that is productivity. Very Happy

Okay, now I'm really really starting work on your ship, Paul. I hope you don't mind I changed a few details (three turrets on top instead of four) and that the bridge has a slight bow upward. I'm sketching it out even as we speak... or I speak.. or write... or... whatever. Finally, progress!

Great! Wow, you must really be talented... sketching while you type! Anyway, go ahead and make detail changes, I don't mind.
