OK, I found the problem. I was supposed to weak-link against OpenAL, but for some reason it strong-linked, so if you don't have it installed it will crash. You can download it here. I have problems with it on 10.2, though, so you may not actually get sound, but it should allow EH to run. And I'll try to figure out how to get it to weak-link again. |
Yeah! i just downloaded that OpenAL and it works pretty good for me now. I don't know how many different sounds are actually in the game, but i seem to get sounds like the song playing and the laser sounds when shooting. I also had the sound turned down pretty low on my computer, so I assume that the all sounds are working...
Also, i've got an iMac G3 PowerPC... with Mac OS X 10. 2. 8, 256 MB, 600 MHz..... and the framerate stays around 30-45fps, so the game runs pretty smooth and steady.... Thanks for your help!!! |

OK, I'm stumped (and dis-heartened). I upgraded to Panther today (not just for EH, but was hoping it would help). I'm still getting 1-3 fps on my machine.
What is going on? I can't fathom why others with similar machines/OS's are getting 30fps. I don't have any services (apache, ftp, sharing of any kind) turned on.
If it will help I'll submit Activity Monitor lists or something. I've got an iMac DV+ 450 mhz with 384mb ram. The graphics card is a Rage 128 Pro with 8mb of memory.
Any ideas? _________________ Nitewing '98

Great! That's all the sounds, in fact. Not sure why they don't work on my 10.2! Crazy computers... _________________ Differentiation is an integral part of calculus. |

Don't give up quite yet, I've still got a couple ideas!
It could be the threading, so I'll repost an unthreaded version for you, to see if that works. _________________ Differentiation is an integral part of calculus. |

OK, here's a link to version 0.6.5, which is the last non-threading version. Hopefully that will work (and not have any other issues ). _________________ Differentiation is an integral part of calculus. |

Thanks Paul, I'll give it a try.
BTW: There IS a difference in the graphics hardware that came in about the time my machine and the 500mhz machines were made. The difference is 8mb of video RAM (what mine has) and the 16mb that the later models came with that same year. On the machines that are able to run at 30fps, does anyone know how much video RAM those machines have?
If this version doesn't work, should I assume it's my graphics card? _________________ Nitewing '98

Hmm, you're right. My iMac has 16 MB VRAM. I don't honestly know how much effect video memory has on a game... OpenGL doesn't give fine-tuned control over that aspect. But I suppose if it has to keep swapping out textures that might take a hit.
Try jumping into the Haven system next to Sol, which only has 1 planet, and not nearly as many spaceships. That should reduce the number of textures required, which should indicate how important texture memory is. _________________ Differentiation is an integral part of calculus. |

I'll try that, but even in "open space" (no planets visible or selected) I'm getting 1-3 fps, so I don't have a lot of hope.
I've been researching this and apparently, I'm not the only one that is griping about the low VRAM in these machines. We're incapable of running most OpenGL games. _________________ Nitewing '98

Don't know if this helps, but how many colors is your monitor showing? I'm using a 2Ghz, 128 MB VRAM G5 imac, and I normally get about 200ish fps in windowed mode. When I played with color depth & set it to 256 colors to see if it would run faster, it dropped clear down to 4 fps! I know it doesn't make much sense, but maybe that's why you're getting low framerates. I also noticed that the problem went away when I went to fullscreen mode. _________________ There are 10 kinds of people: those who understand binary, and those who don't. |

Now that's just weird...
In looking at how big the various textures are, most of the planets take up 1 MB, most of the spaceships are 1/4 MB, and of course there are weapons and asteroids, so it could easily fill up an 8 MB card. _________________ Differentiation is an integral part of calculus. |

I've got my monitor set for "millions" of colors, so I doubt that's it. You've got 16 times the graphics memory of my machine though, and a G5 instead of a G3, so I don't doubt your frame rate is that high. _________________ Nitewing '98
