Alrighy... i don't want to make waves here and im not attacking anybodies beliefs here... but i have always been fascinated by the power that the catholic church had over the empires of europe. they were able to control kings and emperors with the threats of excommunication, they had the inquisition that would punish and torture heretics and so one and so forth... I see this as one of the most underused arch-villains possible. A church that has ultimate power over the other governments thru religious beliefs and therefore have their own empire. this church would have become corrupt over time and they would use their influence on the governments to cover up secret activities of horrible atrocity. and what your missions could be is to expose this church... BUT HOW?! they control everyone! so then you would have to prove the existence of alien races which would disprove the church's beliefs and effectively destroy that religion.. but bring fairness to the galaxy. i think this would be a very cool mission string.
of course the new prussians would be out of this whole loop... and maybe they would even be the ones to give you these missions... I hope i haven't offended in anyway... but i think it would add a cool layer to this game if there was some sort of religion, that we would make up, that drove everything...

I think religions splinter too easily for that to be reasonable in a galaxy with free information and simple travel. That might be able to work in somewhere as part of one empire, but I don't think it would work across borders.

It would perhaps work if there was one large controlling power that enforced the religion like the roman empire for example.
I liked ur idea of parallels you mentioned in a previous thread. Thats a clever way of going about things.
