.Solid? Is that a file format for 3D modelling? I haven't run across it before…

Can you provide any more information on it?

Unigraphics makes those =P
Only place I have seen .solid's are in Lugaru.

Has anyone used Meshwork for modeling?? Nice low poly app, and cheap too, though I am hearing very good things about Wings3d and whats that other one called, something like Jaguar =\

I haven't tried either one…I've been learning Cararra 2 and trying to replace Infini-D. Very Happy

I just downloaded Wings3d. It's pretty slick. It handles a good number of file formats, including 3ds, it looks like it's got pretty good features, and best of all: it's free open source! OK, looks like I'll try to port over to 3ds here shortly.

The conversion to 3ds is coming along well Very Happy I can now import and display the geometry of any 3ds file. Now I just have to figure out how to handle those textures. Confused

Maybe some of you guys who have experience with 3DS can help me out... from all the documentation and source code I've seen, it looks like 3DS only allows 1 texture coordinate per vertex, no matter how many faces contain that vertex. It seems that this would eliminate full texturing of a solid body, which wouldn't be good. Any thoughts on this? I can always change the format for my game, if necessary.

Forget it, I'm tired of screwing around with 3DS. I'm moving to OBJ. It doesn't appear to have any unnatural restrictions. File sizes are a good bit larger, since it's in ascii not binary, but if they seem to be too large I can add in binary compression. However, since this is for a game, not for professional photorealistic renders, polygon sizes shouldn't go too high.
