Should we get our own server, or use Freenode? Or should we wait and see how much it gets used?
Advantages to Freenode:
It's there.
Lots of people know about it
Very little effort needed
Disadvantages:
Can't expect a permanent channel
Anyone can wander in and be annoying
Advantages to having our own server:
It's totally under my/our control
Disadvantages:
Not sure, but I know there are some.
I'm also working on geting an HTML-based web-chat working…eliminates issues with people finding IRC clients, but it's not as versatile.[/list] _________________ Cap'n Hector

w00t! I got the first vote and put personal IRC server at 100%, I win!
Oh, and your list is messed up.
The HTML WebChat thing does sound cool, we would be able to archive important postings that way, but I still like the versatility of our own IRC server. Plus, if you can write a security script that only allows members to post, or something, then you wouldn't have to worry about people wandering in. You could even write a script that wouldn't even let people see anything being posted. With WebChating, you'ld have to either set it up to force a refresh each second, or we would have to do it manually.

margh?
three guesses as to what got my vote
anyway, i dont like random annoying people, and if you need a computer online all the time i can volunteer mine as it's always on and we have a cable internet connection. seriously though, it's always on, i occasionally restart it for updates and such, but other than that it's on.
although having random annoying people could be fun cuz i could drive them away ...i like messing with annoying people

Computers being on all the time isn't a problem for me. I run two webservers out of my bedroom, and get 20-40 day uptimes without issue…it's mostly my inexperience with Linux that forces reboots.
I'll talk to the guy that runs the server caphector.com is on and see what he thinks…and look into servers I can run here. _________________ Cap'n Hector |

Hmm, doesn't look like it's much of a contest _________________ Differentiation is an integral part of calculus. |

Fine, then…I'll set one up.
[furious typing]
Here's the address: irc.xxxessive.com
I can't help with client config beyond Irssi, since that's the client I use.
In general, you'll need to add a new server (namely, irc.xxxessive.com) and connect to that.
xxxessive.com is one of my personal domains; no not-safe-for-work content on it. If anyone can't connect with that domain name I'll grab a different one.
Edit: I'll be signed in, but I can't promise I'll respond. I'm at work and can't always watch the IRC room. _________________ Cap'n Hector |

Spiffing. Once we've been chatting a bit, I'll get a stats page together. _________________ Cap'n Hector |

How much people post, who posts most in a given time period, stuff like that.
An example from a channel I hung out in for a while is here. _________________ Cap'n Hector |

Wasn't trying to scare people off with that work comment…feel free to log in and hang around. I'm sure other people will wander in with time, and meetings can be set up. Was just saying that I, personally, may not see you sign in, and I didn't want anyone feeling slighted. _________________ Cap'n Hector |
