Woo hoo!
http://orange.blender.org/
Look especially at:
http://orange.blender.org/blog/licence-to-drive
And now for something completely different:
I'm sorry I've ever said this, but the reason you haven't seen any ships from me is that I can't ship model. It try and I try, but it just turns out too smooth and organic looking and not industrial (think speeders from first Lilo and Stitch movie only crappier). I'm a character modeller. Goon is a ship modeller (who cheats by not rendering his ships himself ). I just need practice to apply what I know to ship modelling, but I can only model organic shapes such as plants and creatures right now. If you want, I'll show you this character I'm working on (time allowing). It's not at a showable stage now, but will be eventually (i.e. probably next month - workload is tremendous right now). In a couple of days I'll post some previz sketches I've done.

hmmm.... introduce a new race like the bugs in starship troopers or tyrannids in warhammer 40k.... then you can model creatures and use them as ships...
just j/k... please don't.
But you can model characters and put them in the mission computer page? or even the planet page? or like pictures of dockworkers unloading cargo? That would make landing on planets less tedious. (unless it increases too much in loading time)
But what do you use to model in 3D? I want to try.... I've taken a course in 2D graphics design ... But that was like designing presentations, "touch screens" and ads.... |

I use Blender 3D and The GIMP (just do a search on this site for blender or gimp and you essentially find all my posts ).
In short:
Blender 3D:
www.blender3d.org
The GIMP:
www.gimp.org
They are both freeware/open-source and are bery powerful. Blender is a modeller and GIMP is a texturer/photo-manipulator.

You're welcome.
If you need any help with either, just post it here.
