We need some kind of indicator to tell us where the "external mass" is, or a key command that will automatically turn the ship away from it. Sometimes I leave a planet and I can jump out of the system almost instantly. Other times, it feels like I'm flying forever before I'm far enough away.

Good point, one idea is to give the player the ability to switch view modes - sorta like when Luke uses the guidance system in the Ti-Fighter. When the player switches to that mode, he could see what size ships´ shields were and how damaged they were; also in this view the player would see a large glowing sphere representing the minimum jump distance.

There are so many ways I could run with this, keep up with ideas. Every so often I´ll come across an idea and expand it by 1 million - sorta like how I developed my 3D IFF.

why not just go:

EXTERNAL MASS TOO CLOSE. ERROR ERROR
->

Thats the arrow pointing to nearest external mass...


that'd be much simpler.

A lot of things are cool.... even a 1000000 polygons capital ship..... but it'd make the game not as good when its implemented.... Unless you could simplify the idea a little more/explain clearer, so that people would actually use it...
